Alec Thomas scored three hits, including a go-ahead run on Gerald Perdom’s single in seven innings, with the Arizona Diamondbacks defeating the San Francisco Giants 4-2 in Monday’s four-game series opener at Phoenix.
After a two-run double by Tyler Fitzgerald painted the Giants 2-2 at the top of the seventh, the Diamondbacks pushed past the ultimate difference maker at the bottom of the inning against San Francisco ace Logan Webb. Thomas and Jose Herrera hit one single in a row before Perdomo’s bloopers on the head of shortstop Willie Adams.
The Giants reappeared to tie the scores together once again as Christian Koss began his high drive towards the top of the field fence on the left. The Diamondbacks jumped through fielder Timtawa and reached the top of the fence as fans were stretching their gloves towards the hit. The ball went over the Tower gloves and entered the fan’s mitt.
The referee initially controlled the fan’s interference and called it the second interference in the innings, but reviews of the replay showed that there was no contact between the gloves and the ball’s tower pass. However, it was determined that the ball did not clean the fence without interference, and Cos was awarded only two bases.
Diamondbacks reliever John Curtis hit Rafael Devers – his fourth straight wiff in four nights – and Shelby Miller took Heriot Ramos to the fans to Fan Kos, allowing Arizona to maintain a one-run lead.
Eugenio Suarez led from the bottom of the 8th in the 26th Homer of the season, adding a ninth cushion to Miller. The veteran then retired from the side for his 10th save, ending Arizona’s four-game winning streak.
The Diamondbacks scored their first run of the game with a slow error by Giants catcher Patrick Bailey. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit his 11th solo homer from his sixth Webb.
Curtis (1-0) got two outs and was given the victory after Ryne Nelson had two runs and five hits in six 2/3 innings. Nelson hit a seven without taking a walk.
Webb (7-6) was charged with three runs with seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and incited seven.
Fitzgerald gathered two doubles, while Dominique Smith had doubles and singles for the Giants.
