Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs passed a physical exam, was removed from the physically unable to play list and is eligible to take part in Dallas’ first padded practice of the summer on Tuesday.
Head coach Mike McCarthy said before practice that the Cowboys would “wisely” bring Diggs back to the roster to conserve their No. 1 cornerback for the regular season. With Diggs out for the final four months of the season and the playoffs, the Cowboys welcomed the breakout season of Pro Bowl cornerback Darron Brand.
McCarthy said he knows Diggs missed being on the field.
“Of course he missed it. No one wants to sit in a classroom all day,” McCarthy joked.
Diggs tore the ACL in his left knee during practice before Week 3 of last season.
The Cowboys expect Diggs to be ready for the season opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 8, barring any setbacks.
Diggs, 25, is a two-time Pro Bowl selection who led the NFL with 11 interceptions in his second year in the league in 2021. He had one interception and one forced fumble in his first two games of 2023 before his injury.
Diggs has appeared in 47 games (46 starts) for the Cowboys since being selected in the second round of the draft out of the University of Alabama in 2020, recording 18 interceptions (two for touchdowns), 52 pass breakups, two forced fumbles and 173 tackles.
