Costa Rica overturned Suriname 4-3 on Sunday night in San Diego with a penalty kick goal in the 13th minute of stoppage time in Conca Caff Gold Cup Group A play.
Taking advantage of a foul in the penalty area by Dion Malone in Suriname, Manfred Ugarde transformed the winner with a right foot shot in the lower right corner. It was Ugardo’s second penalty kick goal in the game after giving Costa Rica (1-0-0, 3 points) a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute.
Suriname (0-1-0, 0 points), who were not caught up in the early deficits, was even drawn out from goals from Gyrano Kerk (34th minute) and Richnel Margaret (59th minute), and advanced 3-2 with a penalty kick goal from Shaquil Pinas in the 76th minute.
This time, it was Costa Rica who rebounded in the 76th minute with Josimar Alcocer’s tied goal. Both teams got stretches, but were empty until Ugard’s second tally.
Costa Rica began the score in the 14th minute with a shot from Alonso Martinez’s close, adding Ugardo’s first penalty kick five minutes later.
In shot attempts (19-9), goals (9-6) and corner kicks (9-2), Costa Rica held the edge. Suriname goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen stopped five shots, but counterpart Keylor Navas made three saves.
