Former restaurateur Steve NigrenThe founder of Serenbe joined Earth911 to discuss his vision and progress towards a new model of the community. He shares how his love for the hill country began in his weekend retreat that led three generations of his family to live in Selembe.

Nygren sold dozens of restaurants across the country and put his attention into building Selembe. Urban Land Research Institute First Sustainability Award. Bringing a lifelong hospitality experience to the project, Nygren and his company have gathered a range of shops, restaurants and a variety of home designs, ranging from large detached houses to small studio flats that allow all their income to live and work in Serenbe. The community also offers theaters, art programs and other programs for residents. Because it is located near Atlanta, Serenbe combines the conveniences of rural life with the nearby urban centres.
We discuss the challenges of Selembe as an ideal home, the challenges of building a town from scratch coexist with nature, and how Selembe supports small and medium-sized businesses located in the community.
