The Kansas City Chiefs have given running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire a 21-day practice period.
The Chiefs’ trade took place on Wednesday. Edwards-Helaire, who started the season on the reserve/non-football player list, will have 21 days to be inactive or leave the club.
In August, Edwards-Helaire revealed on social media and also told reporters at training camp that he has been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder since December 2018.
“Sometimes I end up in the hospital because I can’t stop vomiting, and I don’t really know how to stop it,” he said, according to ESPN.
“It’s really bad dehydration…but it’s just not really being there mentally,” he said, adding that an attentive teammate was “‘Okay, Clyde’s not laughing, he’s not giggling, he’s not himself. “You can realize that there is no such thing,” he added.
Edwards-Helaire, 25, did not reveal the cause of her PTSD, other than citing a “self-defense situation” she experienced in college.
The Chiefs (4-0) are preparing to lose running back Isaiah Pacheco, who underwent surgery for a fractured fibula last month and is expected to be sidelined until at least November.
Kareem Hunt rushed for 69 yards and fellow running back Samaje Perine scored a touchdown in Kansas City’s 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
The Chiefs selected Edwards-Helaire out of LSU in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He played in 48 games (32 starts) over four seasons, rushing 441 times for 1,845 yards and 12 touchdowns. He added 765 receiving yards and 7 scores.
Kansas City hosts the New Orleans Saints (2-2) on Monday night.
