ChatGPT launched a search engine, entering a market that had been dominated by and synonymous with Google for decades.
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, announced ChatGPT Search on Thursday. This version of the popular chatbot allows users to stay up to date with the latest information available on the internet.
Many of the results for your query will appear similar to what you’d find in a standard Google search. For example, searching for “Chinese food” will bring up a list of nearby restaurant reviews, while searching for travel advice to Costa Rica will bring up a list of travel blogs and hotels. Additionally, similar to search engines, the tool’s ability to provide real-time information for queries that can change quickly, such as sports scores, stock prices, and sports results, which users want to know immediately. Emphasis is placed on weather.
The tool then summarizes that information and tells you where it came from. In preparation for launch, OpenAI has signed several deals with media companies, including: atlantic ocean, wall street journaland vox Make sure your content is included in search results.
during public release Q&A on Reddit Regarding the launch of ChatGPT Search, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised ChatGPT Search as an improvement over current search formats.
“I think for a lot of queries, it’s a faster, easier way to get the information you’re looking for,” Altman says. “I think we’ll see this especially for queries that require more complex exploration, and we’re also looking forward to the future of being able to dynamically render custom web pages in response to search queries.”
An OpenAI spokesperson said ChatGPT Search aims to simplify the process of finding information online by leveraging ChatGPT’s natural language processing skills and providing users with access to trusted sources of information. He said that he is doing so. Google did not respond to a request for comment.
ChatGPT Search uses other search engines on the backend to power your search results. One of them is Bing, a search engine run by Microsoft, one of OpenAI’s biggest investors, Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI’s vice president of engineering, said in comments on a Reddit Q&A. . OpenAI does not disclose the names of the other search engines it works with. An OpenAI spokesperson said ChatGPT Search combines search technologies to provide results.
ChatGPT isn’t the only company trying to take on Google with an AI-powered search engine. Jeff Bezos-backed startup Perplexity advertises itself as an AI search engine. (luck Perplexity and revenue sharing available agreement Google also uses the Gemini large-scale language model on its own search results to summarize the content that typically appears within the links it lists as search results.
ChatGPT has made very little progress in chipping away at Google’s approximately 91% market share in the search engine market. According to a survey of 1,300 people conducted in September by the investment firm Evercore. 8% of respondents chose ChatGPT over Google Their search engine of choice increased from 1% in June.
Progress may be slow, and no single study reflects the entirety of the market trends that shape Google’s $175 billion search advertising business, but given Google’s dominant position, , a rather remarkable development given that it has become a verb. Google is such an immovable force that even Microsoft’s efforts last February to use ChatGPT to power Bing’s search results (considered a key differentiator at the time) remained less than 1 percentage point. Increase market share. Now, Microsoft and OpenAI appear to be reversing strategy and using Bing to power ChatGPT.
Even with these tortoise-like profits, Google still dominates its competitors. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, doesn’t release exact numbers on search queries, but the number is in the billions per month. Even without specific numbers, it’s significantly higher than the number of users for ChatGPT and Perplexity. ChatGPT announced in August that it had 200 million weekly users and about 800 million monthly users. According to the New York Times, Perplexity had 10 million monthly active users as of February, which is impressive for a startup, but pales in comparison to Google’s size.
Nevertheless, the industry-wide sentiment in Silicon Valley is that AI will change the nature of search engines. But how exactly that happens is still unknown, even by major players in AI like ChatGPT. When a Reddit user asked Kevin Weil, chief product officer at OpenAI, about the differences between AI-powered search and the old-school version, he said it’s still early days.
“This product just launched today, so there’s still a lot to learn about how search is similar and different in the world of AI. We’d love to hear your feedback!” Weil wrote on Reddit. Ta.
