Daphne Ewing-Chow (Cayman Compass) I’m writing about the many activities taking place today in the Cayman Islands, on Saturday, June 8th, World Marine Day! Ewingchou reminds us that this year’s theme is “Wonder: Maintaining what supports us.” She said, “The questions Cayman faces are: How do you protect what defines us?”
More than that 46,000 square miles of ocean And, just 102 square miles of land, the Cayman Islands is an overwhelmingly defined country in its oceans. The country’s maritime region accounts for approximately 99.7% of its jurisdiction (one of the highest proportions in the world).
It is responsible for observing Cayman waters not only environmental obligations but existential obligations. and World’s Sea Day On June 8th, under the theme of “Wonder: Maintaining what supports us,” the questions Cayman faces are:
This year, a series of events provide an opportunity to learn, reflect and act on those reality. Coral restoration diving, interactive marine science fairs, free documentary screenings and real-time underwater classrooms provide public opportunities to directly engage in the work of protecting Cayman’s marine ecosystems.
Coral recovery
On Saturday, June 8th, we will be attending a special coral restoration seminar and diving into Divetech’s Lighthouse Dive Resort in West Bay.
The day begins at 9am with a Coral Restoration Seminar, followed by a guided 10am dive into the Sandal Nursery Gardens at Lighthouse Point, home to the garden eel and a 20-foot bronze “Guardian of the Reef” statue.
Participants look forward to practical leaf repairs using expert guidance from the Cayman Eco Divers Reef Foundation.
Divers are open water certified and must bring or rent their own diving gear. Includes a complimentary tank and drinks.
To participate, email Steven Fanning at steven.fanning@cdg.ky or email 325-3525 on WhatsApp.
Marine Science meets cinemas
Even if you can’t dive, you can actually dive deeper. On Friday, June 6th, at 10am, the Central Caribbean Institute is holding a free, immersive screening.Leaf will be live: Climate change and our oceans at Kamana Bay Cinema.
The event will blend Little Cayman’s science, storytelling and real-time underwater footage to explore how ocean heat waves affect local coral reefs and how the ocean’s natural ability to absorb carbon and regulate the climate can help us fight back.
Viewers can interact with CCMI’s Dive Team Live and submit coral reef questions during the broadcast.
Space is limited and registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance. Donations are welcome and support CCMI’s important conservation and education work. Register at reefsmail@reefresearch.org online.
Meet the marine scientist
From 11am to 5pm on Friday, June 6th, the Ministry of the Environment will take over the UCCI Campus Courtyard for the first World Ocean Day Fair.
Meet the scientists behind Cayman’s cutting-edge marine research and explore interactive booths on everything from coral nursery to deep-sea ecosystems. This is your chance to ask real questions and get answers from people who are actually working.
Inside the Cascade Lecture Theater, we will catch screenings of two new documentaries. Our global ocean: the blue heart of the planet‘, produced by CIG Office-UK, highlighting the global ocean resilience through the Cayman lens, “Tag and Track: Cayman Islands Shark Diary”you can see shark research and tracking techniques behind the scenes. Both films will be screened for free at Kamana Bay Cinema on World Ocean Day, Sunday, June 8th, from 2pm to 6pm.
