Modern times have attempted to abolish authority. This is most commonly done by advocating anarchy. Rather, it justifies its established power in terms of an imaginary autonomy, insisting on replacing the arbitrary dictates of power and much of what makes us human with scientific rationality.
However, authority is necessary in human life, not simply as a cure for weakness or evil. It comes from and serves what is noblest within us. French Catholic philosopher Yves R. Simon makes this argument: general theory of authority. With the help of Dominican friar Fr. Aquinas Guilbaud, Thomas delves into this most enlightening book.
