One of Britain’s greatest composers, William Byrd is a fascinating and complex figure in the history of Catholic music. A musician at Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Chapel, he worked alongside the highest offices of the Church of England, composing music for Catholic secret masses. In the first of two episodes about Byrd, singer and academic Kelly McCarthy sets Byrd in the context of the musical and religious upheavals of post-Reformation England. She tells of how he acted in English court circles and of his secret Catholic activities, including his three Masses.
