St. John Duns Scotus (1265-1308), a Franciscan monk known as the “Subtle Doctor,” was one of the most important theologians and philosophers of the Middle Ages, but over the centuries he has been compared to the “Angelic Doctor,” St. Thomas Aquinas, and has fallen into disrepute, or at least been ignored.
Interest in Scotus has been somewhat revived since Pope St. John Paul II beatified him, calling him “Defender of the Immaculate Conception” and “Bard of the Incarnation”.
Indeed, Scotus’ greatest legacy is his claim that Mary was conceived without original sin, a controversial position at the time but vindicated centuries later when it was declared dogma by Pope Pius IX. This is reason enough to know Scotus, even if he ultimately took a back seat to Aquinas.
Thomas Ward, The Order of Love: An Introduction to John Duns Scotusjoins the podcast to discuss aspects of Scotus’s thought and his background in the early history of the Franciscan Order.
