Catholic sculptor Christopher Ales joins the podcast to introduce the art of sculpture, especially its formal characteristics. Ales mostly works on church commissions, and the theoretical points of the conversation are made clear by reference to some of his recent works, such as the ongoing Pieta and the monumental sculpture of St. Joseph, patron saint of a happy death.
Topics include:
- Collaborating with patrons on commissioned works
- Iconographic traditions in sculpture and painting
- Drawing as the roots of sculpture and painting
- The challenge of modeling anatomical shapes without being bound by literal accuracy
- Decorative and Representational Aspects of Visual Arts
