During Holy Week in 1962, Bishop Karol Wojtyla invited Polish artists to a retreat, the text of which is now published in English with commentary by the Institute for the Theology of the Body. God is Beauty: A Gospel and Art Retreat.
TOB Institute Director Christopher West joins Thomas Milas to discuss the retreat and how it connects to St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. The themes include:
- God is beauty
- The Incarnation is perfect beauty manifested in the human body
- Artists are the ones who convey the beauty that comes from God
- Responsibility for the Artist’s Talent
- The gendered body is a symbol of triune relationship and fertility
- The dangers of “moral minimalism”
- The Crucifixion: Where Moral Conscience and Beauty Meet
- WojtyÅ‚a’s work builds on traditional theological symbolism rather than replacing it.
Thomas also talks about his experience attending ballet and how it challenged him to see the body in a new light.
