Thomas discusses Walker Percy’s first novel with Catholic filmmaker Nathan Douglas. movie fan. They consider the “search” for meaning of the protagonist Binks Bolling, who is plagued by ennui, and which he ultimately finds through responsibility. It is not a responsibility driven by admirable “values” but a responsibility driven by love.
They also note how Binks seeks a deeper connection to reality through his movie-watching habits. Percy has many moments of transcendent beauty in the film, given that the novel was written just before the concept of “cinephilia” developed by French critics reached the United States. There are some interesting depictions of finding out.
