Carlota Ciganda waited nine years for her third LPGA Tour title with a dramatic victory in the Major LPGA Classic as Lexi Thompson missed stopping her long drought.
Shiganda began the day as part of a six-way tie for the lead heading towards his final day at Britefield Country Club. There, she recovered from her early bogey to three of the birdies’ final holes, leading to the top of a busy leaderboard.
The Spaniard followed a birdie on the par third day on the 15th and then fired her approach into the leg on the 17th of the par 4, before closing the 5-under 67 to round out the impressive victory.
Shiganda finished the week at Under, 16, and shot the shot by playing his partner Haejin Choi.
“After all these years, I’ve clearly felt amazing,” Shiganda said. “I knew I could do that, but obviously, as the years continue and you start to get older, you start to doubt yourself.
“I think there’s a great team around me this year. A new caddy doing a great job, and I’m very pleased with the whole team. I believe we can do this.
Choi finished with a 68, cancelling a penagriti hole bogey with a birdie, but Somi Lee was another stroke in third place ahead of Thompson, Celine Butier and Nanna Korsz Madsen.
Thompson, who won the last of 11 LPGA Tour titles at the event in 2019 and now a part-time LPGA Tour schedule, also began his final day tied to the lead before stagnating along the ending stretch.
The 30-year-old missed an 8-foot putt for a par on the 16th, and came closer the following year, leaving Thompson, who finished runner-up in last year’s event, in fourth place.
England’s Bronte law jumped into the seventh share with a card of 68 in the final round.
