“I was drunk that day,” Delevingne recalls. “I was eight years old, which is a weird age to be drunk.”

“I thought drugs and alcohol would help me,” she said, “but they didn’t. They just made me sad and depressed.”
But now that she’s quit drinking and has been sober for several years, Delevingne says, “I feel like I’ve got my power back. I feel like other things no longer control me. I feel like I’m finally free.”
“I like AA meetings and I go when I can. Some people would say I don’t go often,” she added, “but I do it my way and it works for me. It’s different for everyone. Some people can go hundreds of times and it doesn’t work. Some people go once and then leave. Some people go when they don’t need to.”

That month, the model sparked public interest when she was photographed shoeless at Los Angeles airport. At the time, she had just returned from Burning Man, where she was photographed getting into an SUV with messy hair and her legs dangling out the window.

“I think a lot of things fell into place once I hit 30. I think my 20s were amazing, but there were a lot of other things I wanted to focus on,” Delevingne said. “I feel like I wasn’t as confident as I was in my teens, I was always questioning myself and I was a little bit insecure.”
“[But] “Is it really true that women are at their peak in their 30s? I don’t care about that anymore,” she said. “I’m a lot kinder and gentler to myself and I think something has definitely changed this year.”
Delevingne explained that in her 20s, she “strived so hard for other people’s approval and love,” but she would ask herself, “Why? It’s not important, it’s not going to make me love myself more. It’s never going to happen.”
Now in her 30s and with the blessing of experience and emotional maturity, Delevingne said she is taking time to “heal and focus on myself and what I want to do.”
