X-Men ’97 is a revival of the classic 1990s animated television series. The story begins immediately after the events of the original series, maintaining continuity and preserving the popular elements that made the original a hit show at the time. Many of the original voice cast members return, including Kal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zahn as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Allison Seely Smith as Storm, and Adrian Hough as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, adding originality and contributing to the overall nostalgia of the TV show. Watching this show on Saturday mornings makes me feel like a kid again. I was 7 years old when this show aired on early morning TV, and it still brings back fond memories.
The show has many new stars, including Ray Chase replacing Norm Spencer as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale replacing Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Holly Chou replacing Allison Court as Jubilee, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, JP Karliac as Morph, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Ross Marquand as Professor Charles Xavier, and Guy Agustini as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot.

The series begins in a world where the X-Men are struggling with the death of Professor Charles Xavier. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, Magneto rises to the occasion and becomes the new leader of the X-Men. This adds drama and the team’s dynamics are frequently tested by the new leadership. While dealing with the new leadership dynamics, the X-Men find themselves facing those who will stop at nothing to annihilate mutants. The storyline unfolds without holding back on the action scenes and themes such as grief, loss and acceptance are touched upon throughout the series.
The trailer for the show doesn’t spoil anything for the viewers, so I highly recommend watching all the intros and trying to spot the new changes. The show has a lot of cameos and easter eggs, which has raised my hopes for a possible crossover.
The story has a surprising ending that leaves you eager for the next season. As with any Marvel movie or TV show, there is a mid-credits scene that leaves you wanting more. If you are new to the X-Men, you can jump right in by watching the TV series, but we highly recommend watching the original series to get up to speed on most of the X-Men lore and history.
X-Men ’97 brings our favorite mutant traditions to life with a well-written story that’s full of excitement, surprises, and hope for more adventures.
