Jack Draper lost in straight sets in the men’s singles at the Canadian Open on Wednesday but came back to win a doubles match later in the day.
Draper, the British number one, was playing his first hard-court singles match since the Miami Masters in March after being eliminated in the second round by Taylor Fritz on the clay courts of the Paris Olympics last week.
The 22-year-old lost 7-5, 6-2 to Australia’s Jordan Thompson in just over an hour and a half, setting him up for a natural last-32 showdown with second seed Alexander Zverev.
But Draper returned to the court just two hours later to reach the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles against Italy’s Jannik Sinner.
Draper made a series of self-destructive errors in his singles loss, missing out on a chance to gain momentum ahead of the year’s final Grand Slam, the U.S. Open, which is scheduled to begin on Aug. 26 at Flushing Meadows. Live coverage on Sky Sports.
Thompson, ranked 30th in the world, broke in the seventh game to take control and eventually had a third set point after the Briton briefly regained the match on serve.
Draper fought to fend off two break points in her first service game of the second set and produced some eye-catching winners throughout the match.
But costly double faults in the third and seventh games meant his 30-year-old opponent booked a path to the second round.
But the action isn’t over for the British players in Montreal this week, as Draper and Sinner beat Alexander Bublik and Ben Shelton 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 to reach the last eight in the men’s doubles.
Meanwhile at the Canadian Open, Britain’s Harriet Dart lost a thrilling match to Diana Schnyder 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (2-7) in Toronto.
Naomi Osaka beat Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 6-3, 6-1 to set herself up to return to the US Open for the first time since 2022.
