Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, a longtime Democratic congresswoman from Texas, has died at the age of 74.
Her family released the following statement:
Today, with deep sadness at her loss but deep gratitude for the life she shared with us, we announce the passing of U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee for Texas’ 18th Congressional District.
She was a fierce advocate for the people and was affectionately known simply as the “President.”
She is referred to by her constituents as the “Congresswoman” for her omnipresent presence and contribution to their daily lives for over 30 years.
She is a local, national, and international humanitarian who has been recognized worldwide for her courageous fight for racial justice, criminal justice, and human rights, with a special focus on women and children.
Her legislative victories, from the establishment of the Juneteenth federal holiday to the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, influenced millions. But she influenced us most as a beloved wife, sister, mother, and bebe. She will be missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire all who believe in freedom, justice, and democracy. May God bless you, Congressman, and may God bless the United States of America.
Funeral arrangements are pending.

The Gateway Pundit reported in June that Jackson Lee had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
In a published statement, Jackson Lee writes::
“My adult life has been defined by my faith in God, my love for humanity, and my dedication to public service. As a Member of Congress, I have been honored to be one of the leaders in the fight for justice and equality for all people, especially the underprivileged and disenfranchised. Today, my fight has become more personal, but I approach it with the same conviction and courage.”
“Doctors have confirmed my pancreatic cancer diagnosis, and I am currently undergoing treatment to fight this disease that affects tens of thousands of Americans each year.
“I am confident that my doctors have come up with the best plan to target my specific illness. The road ahead will not be easy, but I believe God will make me strong.”
“To the voters of the 18th Congressional District: It has been my greatest honor to represent you in Congress for three decades. Your hopes and aspirations motivate me to work every day on behalf of our community. While there will be times when I am absent from Congress as I continue my treatment, please rest assured that my office will continue to provide the important constituent services you have rightly expected.
“I am committed to working with Congressional leadership, including Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the Speaker of the House, to serve our country and be present for votes on legislation vital to the prosperity and security of the American people. By God’s grace, I will soon recover to full strength.”
“As always, please pray for me and my family. You are in mine too. As always, may God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America.”
This is a developing story.
