Bitcoin prices fell as presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump faced off in Philadelphia for their first debate ahead of the November election.
Following the event last night (September 10), Bitcoin was down 1.2% to $56.258 by 1:58 AM ET, with other cryptocurrencies also seeing slight declines in price.
It was the first time the two have publicly debated, and they have focused on just three topics: abortion rights, immigration, and Israel, though the topic of cryptocurrency, which was a major election issue, never materialized.
Crypto will likely be discussed on a larger stage as additional debate proposals are put forward by both parties, with the next one taking place on October 1st in the vice presidential debate between Tim Walz and J.D. Vance.
Harris and Trump’s stance on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency
So far, the most outspoken supporter of cryptocurrencies has been former President Donald Trump, who has twice pledged to make the US the “cryptocurrency capital of the world,” last mentioning it publicly on Sept. 5 at the Economic Club of New York.
The 45th President therefore reiterated his intentions, pledging to “repeal at least 10 old regulations for every new one,” which he said would be “very easy” to do.
“Instead of attacking the industries of the future, we welcome them, including making America the world capital of cryptocurrency and Bitcoin,” he said.
In July, Trump attended a Bitcoin conference where he raised $25 million for his presidential campaign, and just a month later, in early August, he and his sons announced their own cryptocurrency platform.
Vice President Kamala Harris has not been very vocal on the issue, but that could change quickly as more questions are asked of the candidates ahead of the election.
“She is a [Kamala Harris] “I’m going to support policies that ensure emerging technologies and those kinds of industries continue to grow…”
