As Donald Trump and his Republican allies openly work to turn the United States into a monarchy again, Independence Day, which marks the nation’s victory 248 years ago in rejecting an autocratic king, has become a solemn occasion.
Biden-Harris 2024 spokeswoman Sarafina Chitica said: Many amazing events preceded this day Donald Trump has a varied record of rejecting democracy, prioritizing personal power over the country, declaring his intention to be a dictator for a day, and inciting violent and deadly insurrection.
“Today is a day to celebrate the freedoms Donald Trump is trying to take away, a day to honor the troops he called ‘idiots’ and ‘losers,’ and a day to commemorate the birth of our democracy as convicted felon Donald Trump fights to become a dictator,” Chitika said in a statement sent to Politicus USA.
“This Fourth of July, the stakes in the upcoming election have never been higher, and everything we hold dear as Americans is on the line. Voters will be forced to decide between Joe Biden, who has fought to protect our freedom, democracy and military, and a would-be dictator who only thinks about himself. The choice couldn’t be clearer.”
This is a pivotal Fourth of July in our nation’s history. Never before has this nation faced such a dire threat to lose the very thing it was founded on.
The War of Independence was fought to free Americans from a system in which the King was above the law and in which the right to self-determination did not exist.
248 years later, that same right to self-determination is at stake. The Biden-Harris campaign is right: today is a day to celebrate those freedoms and, more importantly, to pledge that we will never allow those freedoms to be taken away.
