In May 2024, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, expressing dissatisfaction with Johnson’s decision to pass a spending bill with Democratic support, filed a motion to remove Johnson as speaker.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other Democratic leaders announced they would vote to advance Greene’s motion in exchange for the Ukraine aid deal.
The motion was successfully advanced by a vote of 359-43, with 163 Democrats and 196 Republicans supporting Johnson.
However, recent developments suggest that Democratic support for Johnson in future challenges may not be guaranteed.
Following the controversial December 2024 spending deal, Mr Jeffries said Democrats would not intervene if Mr Johnson faced a new revolt from his Republican colleagues.
