Apple Inc. aims to enable third-party developers to create software using artificial intelligence models, facilitate the creation of new applications, and make devices more attractive.
iPhone makers are working on software development kits and related frameworks that allow Autsiders to build AI capabilities based on the large language model they use for Apple Intelligence, according to people with knowledge of the issue. Apple hopes to announce its plans at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9, said those who asked not to be identified because the initiative was not announced.
Apple Intelligence has already enhanced iOS and MACOS features, including notification overview, text editing, and basic image creation. A new approach allows developers to integrate the underlying technology into specific features or complete apps. First, Apple opens up a small model that runs on devices, rather than a more powerful cloud-based AI model that requires a server.
This move is part of a broader attempt to become a leader in generator AI. This is the area where apples are hiding. The company launched the Apple Intelligence Platform last year to catch up with its rivals. However, the first features are not widely used, and other AI platforms remain more powerful. The bet is that expanding technology to developers will lead to more attractive uses.
A spokesman for Apple, based in Cupertino, California, declined to comment.
The new plan for developers is expected to be one of the highlights of the developer conference, well known as WWDC. However, the biggest announcement is the overhaul version of the iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems, which are part of a project called Solarium. The idea is to make the interface more unified and cohesive. The new approach is primarily reminiscent of Visionos, the operating system for Vision Pro headsets.
