An amber snow warning has been issued for south-west England, with up to 10cm of snow expected in the worst-hit areas.
London and the south coast were bracing for snow on Wednesday, with the Met Office issuing a yellow snow warning covering large areas of southern England until midnight.
A snow and ice warning has been issued for the UK, leading to widespread school closures and travel disruption, with temperatures potentially plummeting to -20C in the coming days, the BBC reported.
Parts of the UK “could see double-digit temperatures in the coldest areas over the next few nights, with lows of -16 degrees Celsius in some places,” the Met Office said.
Two other yellow snow and ice weather warnings are in place for northern Northern Ireland until 11am on Thursday and northern Scotland until 11:59pm on Thursday.
The cold spell is expected to continue until the end of this week, with Britain’s Health and Safety Executive issuing an amber health alert for all of England until midday on Sunday.
Woman visiting mother in Loughborough ‘trapped’ in flooded home
A 25-year-old woman who was visiting her mother’s house in Belton Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, for Christmas said she never expected to be “trapped” after her home flooded on Tuesday.
Duaa Abdulal is stuck on the second floor with her mother and sister, while the first floor of her house is filled with water.
She said the house was destroyed by flooding from Storm Genk in January last year and the family has not finished renovating it since then.
Abdull said: Last year, my family managed to leave the building.
“When the flood warning came out, we managed to get everything upstairs.
“We’re still recovering from last year, but we haven’t actually finished renovating the house, so it’s stressful.”

Roads affected by Amber Weather Warning – National Highways
Highways said many roads in south-west England could be affected by snow, with some areas under amber weather warnings for snow.
“Snow may affect sections of the M5, A30, A38, A35 and A303, particularly around Okehampton, Bodmin, Blackdown Hills and Haldon Hill,” the group wrote to X.

‘Significant delays’ in south west amid amber snow warning
Devon and Cornwall Police said the south-west was currently under an amber weather warning due to snow, causing “significant delays”.
Police said in a post on X: “Significant delays are occurring around Haldon Hill while we direct traffic.”
“Please avoid the area. Motorists in Devon and Cornwall are asked to only travel if absolutely necessary while a weather warning is in place.”

Latest forecast: 2-5cm of snow expected across large areas of southern England
The Japan Meteorological Agency’s forecast for Wednesday has been updated on its website.
Chief Meteorologist Steve Willington said: “Temperatures remain cool across the south-west of England, with parts of Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset expected to see low levels of sleet and snow on Wednesday afternoon and evening. It’s going to fall to that level.”
“2-5cm is possible in areas over 150m high, but up to 10cm could accumulate on higher ground on Dartmoor and Exmoor.
“Wider areas of southern England could receive up to several centimeters of snow as the system moves eastwards.
“Snow may cause transport disruptions during rush hour tonight.”

The Japan Meteorological Agency warns that snow will continue to fall into the afternoon and evening on Wednesday, potentially causing power outages, train suspensions and road problems, which could disrupt travel.

A&E patients face 50-hour waits as several hospitals declare major incident as flu cases surge
Several hospitals across England have declared major incidents as the number of people admitted to hospital with influenza and other respiratory illnesses soars.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting said he was “truly distressed and embarrassed” by the situation facing patients and staff, with at least 11 hospitals placed on the highest alert level due to increased demand on emergency departments.
