AIG Hospitals Chairman D Nageshwar Reddy has opened the Digital Technology Centre for Healthcare (CDITH) at the International Institute for Information Technology (Hyderabad). The Institute’s new centre will work together to develop healthcare solutions using artificial intelligence and digital technology.
IIIT-H Director P J. Narayanan said the new centre will apply the latest digital technology to develop some immediate healthcare challenges.
“We effectively bridge academic research and clinical practice,” he said.
Previously, Nageshwar Reddy gave a lecture on “AI & Healthcare – Opportunities and Challenges – Why Doctors Don’t Like Artificial Intelligence (AI).”
IIIT-H has established the Kohli Centre for Intelligent Systems (KCIS) to conduct research on advanced technology solutions.
He said that AI will not replace doctors, but doctors who know AI will replace doctors who don’t know AI.
“Like many doctors, I didn’t like AI either. I had a lot of anxiety about it because I thought it would only work in five or six years, so I’d be retiring by then,” he said.
“I felt that AI should not be used for life because it is too complicated. But over the past few years I have realized the importance of AI,” he said.
Reddy has shown many examples of AI applications in the healthcare field and how it benefits doctors, hospitals and patients. He also flagged the need for a robust cybersecurity framework to protect patient data and several challenges when using AI in medical treatments.
“AI in colonoscopy can improve polyp detection, and is much more effective and superior to the human eye detecting. The human body consists of 30 trillion human cells, 39 trillion microbial cells, 20,000 human genes, 20 million microbial genes. AI can help research thousands of bacteria.
