Al Gore, John Kelly, Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris all have two things in common. They all moved into the middle as democratic presidential candidates, and they all lost.
Barack Obama didn’t move into the middle. Obama shifted and did not change when he became a presidential candidate. He won twice.
Joe Biden is a fascinating example. Because he started in the middle, moved left to unite the party and won.
One commonality in recent history that all democratic presidential elections share is that when they move into the middle, they discourage and lose their democratic foundations.
Some 2028 democratic presidential hopes have repeated history in a bad way.
Looking for a path from the political wilderness, potential 2028 candidates, especially those from Blue State, are trying to slowly turn left on social issues, with some people saying that some of the party said they had cost the November election.
Black Maryland Gov. Wes Moore rejected the bill passed by the state legislature that took steps towards reparations. California Governor Gavin Newsom called it “unfair” to enable trans athletes to participate in women’s colleges and youth sports. And Rahm Emmanuel urged his party to return to the centre.

The medium Democrats are spending a moment, with consultants and strategists ready to support them.
The same Democrat strategists and consulting class who were wrong in 2016, 2022 and 2024, and who led to Congressional Democrats losing their seats in 2020, are now like Republicans this time and think they’ll do that right.
Democrats lost their party and lost morale in 2024 due to a very poor campaign strategy and message. The Democrats lost as millions of Democrats didn’t vote. It’s not that Democrats have lost middle men or white people. The Democrats have lost their Democrats. Instead of thinking about how to get the middle, these “experts” should consider ways to activate their party.
It’s not that they’re listening, but Democrat voters have been telling them for months what they want from the party.
Democrat voters want leadership, fight and bold action.
Republicans did not win elections based on distractions from the culture war. They won because prices and inflation angered voters, and Democrats didn’t acknowledge the rage and didn’t deal directly with it.
Following the advice of these consultants, the democratic presidential candidate moving into the middle is not a candidate. The main voters of a democratic president are more skewed to the left, and take these voters off by hearing the message about how Democrats need to move to the center.
The most exciting candidate willing to fight Republicans will be the candidate. Anyone trying to run in the middle is left in the dust.
