Nearly 100 House Democrats sent a letter to the Ethics Committee asking it to release its report on Trump attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz.
In the letter, the Democratic Party wrote:
Guest Chairman and Ranking Member Mr. Wild,
We write today to request the immediate release of the Ethics Committee’s report on allegations of serious misconduct by former Congressman Matt Gaetz. Your committee’s findings remain important in light of President-elect Trump’s nomination of Congressman Gates to be Attorney General, despite Congressman Gates’ recent resignation from Congress.
The President’s Cabinet reflects the President’s pledge to appoint agency leaders who reflect the country they want to serve. The Cabinet advises the President on necessary topics related to each member’s respective responsibilities. I don’t mean this lightly, but they are the most important people in this country. The U.S. Senate has a constitutional duty to provide advice and consent on presidential nominees, and it is important that senators have all the information they need to consider Gaetz’s nomination.
In April 2021, the committee found that “Congressman Matt Gaetz has engaged in sexual misconduct, illegal drug use, shared inappropriate images and videos on the House floor, misused his state identification card, and diverted his campaign.” “We are aware of public suspicions that we may have been involved.” Using funds for personal use and/or accepting bribes, improper gratuities, or impermissible gifts in violation of House Rules, laws, or other standards of conduct. As a result, the commission said it “will launch an investigation and gather additional information regarding the allegations.”
We strongly believe that this situation meets or exceeds these standards. This is not a partisan issue. Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a statement to reporters on Nov. 14 that “there should be no limitations on Senate Judiciary Committee investigations, including the House investigation.” I don’t think so.” Generated by the Ethics Committee. ”
Given the seriousness of the charges against Congressman Gaetz, withholding the findings could jeopardize the Senate’s ability to provide the constitutionally required informed advice and consent regarding this nomination. . Congressman Gaetz’s sudden resignation from Congress should not impede the Senate’s ability to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities. We urge you to immediately release the Ethics Committee’s report on allegations of serious misconduct by former Congressman Matt Gaetz.
There is no reason why the Ethics Committee should not publish its report. Chairman Mike Johnson is trying to curry favor with President Trump by pressuring the Ethics Commission not to release its report.
The reality is that the Ethics Commission has an important duty to the American people and the Constitution to ensure that a suspected sex trafficker does not serve as the next attorney general. Hacker obtains testimony from underage girl who allegedly had sex with Matt Gaetz
The Senate has the right to access all available information. Senate Republican leaders have already rejected Trump’s idea to put Congress on recess so he could use the recess to pass his preferred nominee.
