Sedentary people burn about one-third fewer calories per day. Simply taking advantage of every opportunity to move can make a dramatic difference in how many calories you burn throughout the day. Small movements add up to a lot of calories over time. The trick is to keep moving throughout the day. Write “move” on a post-it note and stick it somewhere you’ll see it when you’re sitting still. Then take advantage of every opportunity to move. Here are some ideas for burning off those extra calories:
- Stomp your feet
- Shake your legs
- Stand up and stretch
- Move your head from side to side
- Change the position
- Wriggling and fidgeting
- Pace up or down
- Please use the toilet on the upper floor.
- Please park at the very end of the parking lot.
- Stand up and walk side to side while on the phone
- Tightening and relaxing muscles
2) Eat small meals often
Evidence shows that eating small meals every 2-4 hours keeps your metabolism running faster than eating larger meals less frequently. When you eat small, frequent meals, your body is constantly working to digest and absorb the food you need for energy.
3) Eat fat
If you want to feel better and lose fat, you need to start eating fat. Not only does fat taste good, but your body needs it to function efficiently. Include a few servings of healthy fats each day to increase your calorie-burning potential. Try incorporating fats like flaxseed oil, hemp seed oil, olive oil, avocado, salmon, albacore tuna, nuts, and seeds into your daily diet.
4) Drink cold water
Evidence suggests that drinking cold water to bring your body temperature may burn more calories than a hot drink, and overall, staying well hydrated helps your body’s metabolic processes burn calories faster.
5) Weight training
Weight training boosts your metabolism in a number of ways: Lifting weights builds muscle tissue, which is metabolically active, so you need calories even when you’re at rest, and helps increase fat-burning enzymes in your body.
6) Spice it up
Eating hot spices may help boost your metabolism. Just half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day can help boost your metabolism and keep blood sugar in check. Don’t like cinnamon in your morning coffee? Taste it with cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper, or wasabi.
7) Eat more protein
Protein requires a more complex chemical breakdown in your body to be digested and used for fuel. For example, it can take up to 30 calories to process 100 calories of protein. Protein also takes longer to digest and keeps blood sugar stable for longer, which helps prevent overeating later in the day. Eating protein as part of every meal and snack increases the total number of calories you burn each day.
