In the 1940s and 50s, Hollywood entered the “noir” period, producing riveted films based on stubborn fiction. These films were set in a dark place and were shot with a black and white aesthetic that fits like gloves. The hardened man wore fedora and smoked cigarettes forever. The women performed a wonderful role as femme fatale. Love was the most reliable way of death. All of these elements were grasped in what Roger Ebert calls “the most American film genre” in his shorts A guide to film noir.
