Jordan Chiles is an exceptional athlete and a member of the gold medal winning U.S. women’s gymnastics team. In the individual floor exercise, she won the bronze medal for her exceptional athleticism and excellence.
The International Olympic Committee wrongfully stripped Chilis of her medal, a step previously reserved for athletes found guilty of cheating or using performance-enhancing drugs. Neither of these was true in Chilis’ case. Her only fault was bureaucratic confusion and missteps by the various judicial bodies that govern the sport. The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee is currently challenging the decision.
After Chiles’ competition, her coach protested the scores, and the judges reconsidered and adjusted the scores, awarding her the bronze medal. However, a subsequent appeal claimed that Chiles’ coach had delayed the protest by four seconds, so the judges stripped her of the medal. USA Gymnastics claims it has video evidence showing the protest occurred before the one-minute deadline, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has refused to review it.
Once the appeal was accepted, it should not have been overturned. The judges who ruled against Chile have a conflict of interest. And overall, this goes against the Olympic spirit. The Romanian team, which lost its bronze medal to Chile, suggested that the three athletes should each be awarded a medal, which is a solution with precedent.
This is not to take away from other athletes. Whether two or three athletes are awarded the bronze medal, or whether it is awarded to just Chilis as the judges determined, Jordan Chilis deserves a medal, and the International Olympic Committee needs to get this right.
