“‘Birthday Song’ is a simple song about friendship and how we sometimes don’t give platonic relationships the respect and care they need to nurture,” singer/guitarist Echo Mars explained in a statement. “While they don’t have the same vocabulary as romantic relationships, I believe those relationships are just as important in making us feel safe, secure and accepted. When choosing our first single, we thought ‘Birthday Song’ would be the perfect way to introduce our new version of Thus Love and our new friends, Ally and Shane.”
Auggie Vos and Benny Shumlin added, “Working with Thus Love is always a joy. It’s a rare and wonderful opportunity when everyone on set is as awesomely weird as we are. We tried to capture this new era of the band with a mish-mash of desire, country, yearning, pop and queerness – party girls and panhandlers alike able to have a blast. For this look, we were excited to immerse ourselves in the dreamy gay magic that southern Vermont evokes in the summer – a world of moss and swamps and sun, where the lines between human and creature begin to blur.”
