Tropical Storm Debby is expected to bring “catastrophic” flooding to Georgia and the Carolinas this week, killing at least five people in the region.
Debby, which has downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane, crossed the Florida-Georgia border late Monday. The storm will sweep up the southern Georgia and South Carolina coasts over the next few days. North Carolina should brace for flash flooding through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
Record rainfall is expected across the Southeast, with more than 2 feet of rain possible by Friday in Georgia and the Carolinas, according to the NWS.
South Carolina was hit hard by the storm on Tuesday, when tornadoes downed power lines and damaged homes in Edisto Beach, and Charleston is expected to receive summer-like rain this week.
At least five people were killed, including a 13-year-old boy in Levy County, when trees fell as the storm moved through Florida. A 38-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy were also killed in an SUV crash in Dixie County.
Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes in Florida as Debby left the state, where more than 16 inches of rain was dumped and major flooding occurred.
Tornadoes threaten South Carolina

As Florida battles Debbie, fraud runs rampant
