Stephen Curry is stepping in. But the show continues.
Ask Draymond Green, who is totally confident about the Golden State Warriors’ playoff chance, despite Curry leaving the opener due to a tense left hamstring against the Minnesota Timber Wolves.
The Warriors cruised to a Despite losing curry, 99–88 win Second quarter.
“Robin has become Batman,” Green explained. “Alfred turned to Robin and they just filled. It was beautiful to see.”
If the Warriors want to grab the lead on the road with a 2–0 series lead on Thursday night, they will likely need to shuffle the starring role again.
Of course, the original Batman is curry. He averaged 24 points in the Warriors’ first-round victory over the Houston Rockets, attracting attention from defenders who helped free many of their teammates on the offensive side of the court.
Curry got off to a great start in Game 1 in Minnesota. He scored 13 points in the first 13 minutes, and the Warriors built an early lead, conquering the Timberwolves crowd and sought victory.
However, Curry grabbed her left foot after making a floating jump shot. He signaled towards the bench that something seemed to be wrong, and he quickly left the game and never returned.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he is planning Game 2 without a veteran Sharpshooter. Curry was expected to undergo an MRI on Wednesday to learn more about the severity of his injuries.
“I don’t know yet,” Kerr said. “But in the hamstrings it’s hard to imagine him playing Thursday.”
So, what happens when Batman goes out?
Robin gets the phone call.
In this case, it means Jimmy Butler. He flirted with a triple double in Game 1, finishing with 20 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in 41 minutes.
Butler loves the spotlight. He played alongside Curry’s Batman Robin this season, but everyone knows he’s the Alpha of the Heart. Look for him to try to take control in Game 2.
Does it work? That’s a difficult question to answer.
Minnesota is a great defensive team despite showing some injuries in Game 1. The Timberwolves are eager to save the game at home before the series moves west, and coach Chris Finch will almost certainly create a game plan that will irritate Butler as much as possible.
As explained by Green, if Robin becomes Batman, Alfred must play the role of Robin. In this case, it means that Buddy Heald is asked to step up and fill in some of the blank left by the curry.
Hield shows that he can handle additional liability. He got 33 points in Game 7 at Houston on 12-15 shots, including 11-9 from 3-point range, and 5 out of eight shots from distance on Tuesday night with Team High 24 points.
It’s reasonable to assume that Hield will cool off soon, perhaps as soon as Game 2. He’s a good shooter, but he averages 11.1 points during the regular season and at some point you’d think he’ll regress to average.
Greene has stepped away from Batman’s description, but obviously he is the villain on any show. He had a strong series opener, finishing with 18 points, 8 rebounds and six assists.
Perhaps equally important, the green played with the edges, but remained careful not to cross the edges. He needs to take that approach again on Thursday. Especially when the action intensifies and the Timberwolves try to beat him in his own game by getting under his skin.
It’s soon to know if curry will return to the series. If so, how soon?
But don’t count the Warriors.
