The parcels allocated to the Dharabi redevelopment project are safe for construction and are not subject to coastal regulatory zone restrictions. The project’s chief and CEO, SVR Srinivas, revealed this on Thursday amid environmental concerns regarding the use of the land in Saltopan.
“The actual streams and wetlands that attract migratory birds like flamingos are located to the east of the highway. There is no such ecological sensitivity or CRZ limit on the west side where DRP land is located.
“All necessary environmental clearances will be officially obtained prior to the start of construction activities. The project will only begin work after strict adherence to all applicable environmental regulations, having received the required green approval and ensuring full compliance with the statutory code,” Srinivas said.
The Maharashtra government has approved approximately 256 acres of salt pan land in Murundo, Kanjurmag and Bando for resettlement of unqualified residents from Dharabi. According to Srinivas, the Saltpan plot is located on the west side of the Eastern Expressway and has not been in contact with the ocean for “nearly 10 years” or “nearly 10 years.”
“A few years ago, these plots were officially abolished by Indian salt commissioners. For nearly a year, salt production has not happened there.
“There is no problem with building affordable housing. Unless these wise steps are taken today, the city could collapse under the burden of population over the next few years,” he said.
