Manager Kris Boyd has made a scathing assessment of Philippe Clement’s future as Rangers manager, insisting that change is needed after the club fell further behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers’ miserable away form continued on Thursday with a 1-1 draw at Dundee, leaving them 15 points clear of their rivals at the top.
They started the game away at Ibrox with just three wins from 10 league games at Dens Park, but a goalless second half saw their record end after Václav Cerny canceled out Oluwaseun Adewumi’s opener. It was not possible to complete the reversal to update.
The result was further fodder for those who believe Clement’s time at Ibrox should be up, with the club’s away fans showing their displeasure as soon as the final whistle blew.
Former Rangers striker Boyd said: “It’s excuse after excuse.” Sky Sports. “Rangers have a team that should come here and mop the floor with Dundee, but they’re hanging on.
“13 points out of 33 away is a disgrace. You can talk about progress but there’s nothing. They say the players are tired and lack confidence. A week ago, 10 days ago They completely destroyed Celtic. They destroyed Celtic.”
“And you struggle for confidence. Before the Celtic game you lose two games, draw one game and lose one game. There was no struggle for confidence against Celtic.
“Then we drew two more games after that and lost all confidence. It just doesn’t make any sense.
“If you look at the club and the pitch now, it’s broken. There’s no pattern of play, there’s nothing. You always cite the Celtic game as Rangers’ best performance this season.
“But it can’t be a one-off, we know that. It’s an absolute shame that Rangers are in this position.”
“And you can see that we haven’t spent money. Money has been spent. Yes, there have been cost savings, but money has been spent.
“I’m not seeing any improvement. I said the injury is getting better. In fact, it’s getting worse.
“You can talk about moving players around and having to play extra minutes. What do you think? You’re a football player. That’s playing time and that’s what you’re getting paid to do.”
“There’s no progress at all. It’s over.
“It’s over. [Rangers CEO] Patrick Stewart, I’m telling you right now, these are the last two away games we’ve played.
“You’ll get to a point where those fans are fed up and won’t come to games, and you’ll see the real problems start to materialize for Rangers because we can’t keep going like this.”
Sutton: Brendan opens the champagne.
Chris Sutton talks about Sky Sports:
“Philippe Clement has to take responsibility, but the players on the pitch also have the knowledge and understanding of how to win games.
“When you look at the Rangers team, you think, ‘Will this jersey fit many players?’” I have said before that there is a loser mentality at the club, but nothing has really changed. Not yet. And this is not just a story about Philippe Clément.
“This has been going on for years and years and years and years and you saw how bland the performance was tonight.Celtic are laughing at them.
“Brendan Rodgers, he’s going to pop the champagne tonight and laugh at them. It’s the beginning of January and it’s embarrassing that Celtic are 15 points clear at the top of the table. It’s shocking. That’s surprising and surprising.”
“Me and I were talking about Chris before the game. [Boyd] I thought Philippe Clement should have left a long time ago. However, they are now at a crossroads of sorts. Can it continue like this? The club is degenerating.
“So are we going to look at that or is Patrick Stewart going to look at the bigger picture and not just the one game that lifted the game against Celtic or the odd game in Europe?
“Clement will come out and say that Celtic have a bigger budget, but Rangers shouldn’t drop 19 points against a team that has a much smaller budget than them and he never mentions that.
“We’re hearing excuses week after week now and it’s not good enough. And it’s about time for him to take charge and he won’t.
“But this Belgian waffle is here to stay. It won’t stop until he makes a decision.”
Clement: I have “200 percent” support from the board.
Manager Philippe Clement has insisted Rangers’ board support him “200 per cent”. Asked if he was confident that the board, which has appointed Patrick Stewart as its new chief executive, still supports him 100 percent, the Belgian president replied: “Yes, 200 percent.” Ta.
“Every day we talk about January, about next season, about everything. Of course the fans are unhappy.
“It’s unfortunate for us that we lost three points, it’s unfortunate for all of us. When we’re good, when we’re playing a good game, the supporters always cheer us on. So today was a good game. There wasn’t.”
“So I understand that they are frustrated about that. I know the supporters, they won’t give up the moment we show quality. “The important thing is that we show quality on the pitch. and that they are always right behind the team.”
“So it’s our job to do that as quickly as possible, and that starts on Sunday and to show quality again on both sides of the game, not only offensively but also defensively.
“Defensively today we were better than the last away game. It’s positive in that sense. The game that Clinton Ciara played in his first game for Rangers was a positive point.”
“But of course in the end it’s the result that matters. A lot of points have been spilled over the last two or three weeks.”
