A part of my mother’s family is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. Whenever I visited there, I loved the taste of Cajun cuisine. Cajun seasoning blends in particular give local Cajun food a special kick. I wanted to recreate recipes for use at home, such as Cajun Chicken and Red Beans.
For years I bought Cajun seasonings from the grocery store, but then I realized it contained MSG, anti-caking agent, and fillers (with gluten!). I had already ordered most of the herbs and spices in bulk, so I started mixing my own spice mix and put it in a small mason jar in the cabinet. (There are some of my other homemade spice blend recipes.)

I bulk order them and then the material costs on the front end, but in the long run they are inexpensive. You can earn about 4-5 times the amount of seasoning mix. We also had individual spices on hand for other dishes.
These are traditionally Cajun seasonings, as far as I know.
Some recipes also require Cajun spice seasonings with cumin, celery seeds, or red chili peppers. Want extra fun/challenge? Use this recipe to make your own garlic or onion powder. (You can also make chili powder from peppers!)
Many of these herbs have antibacterial benefits to help the immune system fight invaders. They are also considered warming herbs that stimulate and help digestion. And sea salt provides the trace minerals that our cells need. That’s an advantage for everyone.

How to use Cajun seasonings
Cajun Cuisine is known for its bold and spicy flavors. Often these dishes are served on rice (a Southern staple) to mellow Cajun flavor. You can also add sides of rice to your meals or cornbread (if you eat grains) or stack them up on vegetables! We found these recipes to be far better than pre-made store-bought options. Nothing beats simple ingredients and true flavor.
Here are some of the recipes I love using Cajun’s seasonings:
- Cajun Gumbolaya recipes -Yes, you read it right! This combination gumbo/jambalaya recipe is full of vegetables like peppers and is mild enough for kids to enjoy. (My kids think so anyway.)
- Spicy Shrimp Stir-fried – With this very tasty stir-fried shrimp, replace basil with two tablespoons of Cajun seasoning to create a variation of soul food.
- Bayou dirty rice – I love this recipe created by my friend Heather. Fair warning: She includes the addition of chicken liver that really enhances the nutrition of this dish. I promise…it’s tasty and really good for you!
- Blackened shrimp and scallop fondue – If you’re dairy, this recipe is out of this world. I serve it with Zoodles (spiral zucchini noodles) or sometimes gluten-free pasta.
- Stir-fried chicken vegetables – Spice this simple stir-fried chicken with Cajun seasoning.
