$1 million grant awarded to the wearable x-ray project
Researchers at the University of Queensland have created X-ray detectors that can be worn in hoodies or blankets to get a quick and accurate scan of a child’s lungs.
Their project adapts patented quantum dot hybrid glass to thin film strips that fit the outline and movement of a child’s body.
He received a $1.6 million ($1 million) grant over five years from the National Health and Medical Research Council to address the challenges of obtaining accurate, high-resolution lung scans in children in critical conditions such as respiratory dissy syndrome, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and chronic lung disease.
Gingwei Hou, an associate professor at UQ’s Department of Chemical Engineering, said the invention has potential use cases in medical imaging of other pediatric and adult diseases.
