Paula Moreno wrote: “In her literary debut, Yurieth Romero reveals the invisible prison that defines a woman’s everyday life. With fierce and enchanting prose, these pages capture readers with contradictions inherent in their longing for freedom.”
Description: “Today, we’re here, waiting in line, just like usual, next to one another. We hate each other, but we’re in the same situation.”
Chiara is a trans woman dreaming of a happy future with the man she loves. Lara is a sex worker who wants to return to her hometown and bury her dead loved one. Without “H” Catelin is a mother who is desperately trying to free her husband. They all exist on the margins of society and are related by singular routines. On Sundays, we visit people in prison. Their pilgrimage is shared by other Afro-Caribbean women like them, and are appointed weekly to gather to visit their sons, grandchildren and ex-husbands. And that lies at the point of that meeting, where this book brings life.
Through the stories that make up this volume – recipient of unpublished works grants to Afro-Colombian authors by the Ministry of Culture of Colombia [Beca de Creación Inédita para Autoras Afrocolombianas] – Romero digs into the world of these women who are waiting forever. The result of her writing is an act of resistance in the face of peripheral violence, both a raw story and us.
