When I first became a mom, I began to wonder about all the ingredients I had on my baby. Unfortunately, most of my questions did not have a good answer. One of the products that surprised me was that the problematic ingredient was baby powder.
Baby powder problem…
As innocent, baby powder often has several hidden ingredients. Until recently, companies like Johnson & Johnson used talcum powder as the main ingredient in baby powder. The problem is that talc is generally contaminated with cancer. now, After 57,000 lawsuitsJ&J recently replaced corn starch talc with talc-free baby powder.
There are still some issues with sensitive skin, but even newer formulations. There is a scent associated with allergen concerns and endocrine destruction. Or benzylsalicylate, which is at high risk of allergies and immunotoxicity…but only if it is in powder form.
When there was something really small, I wanted a personal care product that was safe for baby skin. Thankfully, there are natural baby powders and baby products that are safe at the bottom of your baby.
Make your own homemade baby powder
I found some good store bought alternatives like this Organics from eraorganics and Baby powder with small twigs. But I wanted to find a good DIY version. I doubted that if I could make it, I could save money and customize it.
Unlike some body care recipes that require a lot of attempts before I find a recipe I love, this was relatively easy. Natural powder of certain optional herbs or essential oils.
Baby powder ingredients
I settled on using Arrow Root Powder or Organic Corn Starch as a base and added powdered herbs chamomile And calms the bottom from the calendula. Some recipes add a blend of kaolin clay, baking soda, or tapioca starch. I also experimented with adding a few drops of chamomile essential oil, which also worked very well. If you don’t have chamomile, tea tree or lavender essential oils are a good alternative.
I found it to be the easiest to use when I store it Powdered sugar shaker. Also, when giving this as a baby gift, we package recipe cards into these for more ways to make them.
