TORONTO (CelebrityAccess) — Canadian music education charity MusiCounts has announced it will donate $1 million worth of instruments, equipment and supplies to 74 schools across Canada through its School Funding Assistance Program.
These programs (MusiCounts Band Aid Program and MusiCounts Slaight Family Foundation Innovation Fund) aim to provide grants to under-resourced schools to help keep school music programs going.
Additionally, the MusiCounts Slaight Family Innovation Fund will also support the effort for the first time this year, providing schools with up to $20,000 for culturally relevant and technology-focused programming.
“MusiCounts is thrilled to invest $1 million worth of needed instruments and equipment to welcome students back to school and back to music,” said Christy Fletcher, president of MusiCounts. “When students return to the music classroom, not only will they have guitars, drums, horns and turntables, but they will also find a safe place within their school where they can connect with their peers, build their confidence and find their voice. Congratulations to all of the MusiCounts School Music Program recipients.”
The program has helped schools such as Gilbert Paterson Secondary School in Lethbridge, Alberta, where only a third of students were able to participate in their music program due to inventory shortages and broken instruments. With MusiCounts’ help, the school is expanding their existing rock band program to include all interested students.
