2024 Election Program, Restoring Abortion Access, Protecting LGBTQ+ Youth, and More!
A message from Lana Epting, Executive Director of MoveOn
As MoveOn’s Executive Director, it has been my greatest pleasure to speak with you and my MoveOn colleagues. I am inspired by your commitment to building a better future – from rallies and phone calls to donations and petition signatures. You have shown time and time again that you care about families, communities, and future generations. I am honored to work with you to build a more just country where we can all thrive.
We hope you feel inspired as you read this newsletter. Every accomplishment highlighted here demonstrates the incredible progress you, some of MoveOn’s most passionate advocates, are driving. Together, we will continue to drive progressive victories in this critical election year and beyond.
Trump is not above the law
MoveOn members have been at the forefront of efforts to hold Donald Trump accountable for many years. In 2017, we protested his executive order banning people from six Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. In 2018, we condemned him for separating migrant children from their families, in 2020 for his disastrous response to the coronavirus, and in 2021 for inciting a deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Over the past 12 months, more than half a million MoveOn members have signed petitions calling on the Secretary of State, state officials and Congress to disqualify Trump from holding public office under the 14th Amendment. After Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts in New York, MoveOn members began calling for a fair and just sentence that reflects the seriousness of his crimes. More than 120,000 MoveOn members ordered stickers following Trump’s conviction to remind voters that no one is above the law. They came together to show that Trump must be held accountable and should not be allowed to run for reelection in November.
Hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members signed petitions calling for a trial and ruling before Election Day. Atlanta Journal-Constitution As Trump’s trial in Georgia continues to be delayed, MoveOn has targeted the Georgia Court of Appeals, conveying MoveOn members’ demands that the court overseeing Trump’s criminal trial and appeals end the delays because voters have a right to know the full extent of his crimes before Election Day. MoveOn has been amplifying its members’ voices through social media and engagement with media outlets.
Together, we are working to stop Trump from entering the White House by informing voters across the country that he has been convicted and by letting them know the despicable schemes he will pursue if elected to a second term.
Restoring Access to Abortion
MoveOn members are fighting to stop abortion bans and restore access to abortion. Two summers ago, a Trump-led Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that upheld abortion rights in the United States. Since then, state after state has passed a wave of right-wing anti-abortion laws. These efforts to ban abortion and criminalize those who seek or provide abortions have caused great harm to people across the country.
MoveOn members urged Congress to vote in favor of the Birth Control Right Act, a bill that would codify the constitutional right to birth control. In May, MoveOn members hosted more than 100 abortion-rights-themed election parties across the country.
Abortion is one of MoveOn’s key campaign issues. And we’re working to vote out anti-abortion extremists in the 2024 election. One in eight voters of all ages say abortion is the most important issue to them. Surveys show that these voters are disproportionately Black voters, Democratic voters, women voters, and voters aged 18-29, the youngest voting demographic. MoveOn is helping motivate and convince voters that their vote matters, and get them to the polls to elect leaders who will protect our freedom to decide about our future and our right to reproductive health care.
MoveOn’s member-led 2024 election programme
MoveOn’s greatest strength is the grassroots people power of millions of MoveOn members. In this critical election year, when our rights and freedoms are under threat more than ever by MAGA Republicans, MoveOn members are leading the charge for victory in November by calling for votes early and making a big impact.
MoveOn’s analytics team has identified 1.5 million likely voters in key states and districts who support Democrats but vote inconsistently. MoveOn members are reaching out to these “surge” voters in three ways: by sending postcards, making phone calls and going door-to-door.
Members involve their friends, family and community in this effort by inviting them to informative and fun election parties. These parties are themed around issues that require long-term and immediate attention, such as abortion rights, Pride Month, and Trump’s conviction. MoveOn members hosted approximately 300 parties, mailed 23,374 postcards, and called 57,624 voters.
To strengthen its member-led voter contact programs, MoveOn runs paid communications and traditional rapid response campaigns. This will include a robust digital advertising campaign, leveraging MoveOn’s team of micro-influencers and its own social media reach, and encouraging MoveOn members to share meaningful and compelling stories about why the election matters to them.
MoveOn’s robust 2024 election program is strategically designed to secure the presidency, the Democratic Party’s three-way powers, and defend our democracy against Trump and the MAGA Republicans.
MoveOn members have decided to endorse nearly 30 progressive candidates for Congress so far this year. Members fill out a survey to determine which candidates MoveOn will endorse. MoveOn will only endorse a candidate if a majority of members in each district approves the endorsement.
In May, MoveOn members in Maryland have endorsed Angela Alsobrooks in a crucial election to maintain Democrats’ majority in the Senate. “I’m glad to have MoveOn and its strong grassroots members with me in this fight,” Alsobrooks reports. Other supporters include Rep. Andy Kim, who is running for Senate in New Jersey, and Rep. Summer Lee, who is seeking reelection in Pennsylvania.
For more than 25 years, MoveOn members have led the way by mobilizing at key moments and committing to long-term fights. We have faced great challenges before and won, and together we can succeed again.
“When I first heard about MoveOn, I immediately knew this was work that needed to be done and work that needed to be supported. I’ve been a MoveOn member for over 20 years and I’m very happy with the priorities and strategy MoveOn has adopted – even the name MoveOn. One of MoveOn’s great strengths is that we always move forward and never stand still. Too many organizations do the same thing year after year. MoveOn is amazing because that’s not the case – we move forward!”

Protecting LGBTQ+ Youth
Generation Rainbow was created by MoveOn as an online space for queer people and their allies to take action in response to Republican attacks that seek to erase LGBTQ+ people. MAGA Republicans have stepped up their bigoted attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, with over 500 anti-gay and anti-transgender bills introduced in states and Congress this year alone. From bathroom bans to book bans to drug bans, they have scapegoated, bullied and marginalized the LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender people. Together, we can oust them and elect leaders who will protect the inherent human rights of all people. Learn more, take action, and check out our Pride merch collection at MoveOn.org/GenerationRainbow.
“As a MoveOn organizer, I’ve been so inspired by the passion and compassion of our members as they organize to defend equality within and beyond the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month. MoveOn members are excited to take action.
Kathy from Beaverton, Oregon is one of our amazing MoveOn members. She hosted an amazing phone banking event that brought together 12 volunteers to talk to voters. There were over 200 conversations.
This is the work we need in 2024 to stand up against hate and those who divide our country and to defeat Donald Trump.”
