As a registered dietitian who frequently uses MyFitnessPal to track myself and communicate with clients, I’ve seen how time constraints can make consistent tracking difficult. But MyFitnessPal’s new audio logging feature greatly simplifies the process, making it faster and easier for busy users.

For example, I use this feature to record a typical breakfast of two scrambled eggs, a slice of whole wheat toast, chicken sausage, avocado, and a cup of coffee.

It takes just 15 seconds to enter it into the app and confirm it— a time frame that even the busiest people can manage.

Keep reading to learn more about MyFitnessPal’s new audio logging feature and how to get started as soon as possible.

Advantages of using audio logging for tracking

The audio log feature has several benefits for food tracking with MyFitnessPal.

  • Simplifies portion size guessing: It’s difficult to know how much food you’ve ingested in ounces, grams, or other units of measurement. Next, use your hands to describe your portion size. For example, “I ate a fist-sized piece of chicken for lunch.” or “I ate a handful of blueberries for snack.” (See our handy guide to portion sizes below.)
  • save time: Voice logging eliminates the need to type food into searches, making it faster and easier to track meals and snacks. You can also record multiple foods at once by describing your meals aloud. What’s even better is that you can record multiple meals at once. Open the app at the end of the day, tap “Audio Log” from the log menu, and write about breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Please review, revise, and record as necessary.
  • Log on while you’re on the go: Multitasking? no problem. This feature is great for ensuring you record your meals even if you only have a few seconds of time.
  • May increase consistency: Finding ways to track your meals that easily fit into your daily routine will help you stay consistent. When you maintain healthy habits consistently, you’re more likely to reach your goals.

MyFitnessPal Audio Log FAQ

What types of entries can I record using voice?

You can record available food and drink items in the MyFitnessPal database (one of the largest databases). At this time, you cannot record your weight, workouts, or custom foods or recipes with voice commands. Water can be logged, but only as part of breakfast, lunch, dinner, or as a snack.

Do I need to use a specific phrase to record an item audibly?

It is most effective if you describe what you ate (or drank), how much a serving was, and at what meal you ate (or drank) it. For example, “For breakfast, I had a cup of plain Greek yogurt, a drizzle of honey, a blueberry, and a cup of coffee.”

Is the audio logging feature available on all devices?

Audio logging is available for iOS and Android devices, but all models may require an update for full compatibility. To make sure you’re using the latest version of the app, visit the app store.

Will audio logs work offline?

No, MyFitnesspal’s voice logging feature requires an internet connection to process voice commands.

Are audio logs available in all languages?

Currently, the audio logging feature is only available in English and limited to the US market.
