Have you ever wished you had a giant screen for your gaming sessions or work projects? If you have a Meta Quest headset, you’re in luck – now you can connect it to almost any device.
Meta’s new app for Quest headsets HDMI Linkallows you to use your headset as a giant screen for any device with HDMI output, including media players, gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch or PS5, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and more.
Additionally, the Meta Quest 3 will have AI ahead of Apple’s Vision Pro. Here’s how to enable it.
The good news for older headset users is that the app works with the Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Pro.
Meta says that HDMI Link lets you enjoy a variety of 2D content in a 1080p 3D space with little to no lag, though it may not be a good choice for movies and shows. The company warns that certain apps, especially streaming apps, use built-in copy protection software that can interfere with HDMI Link.
In 2021, Meta released a similar feature called Air Link, which lets you wirelessly connect your Meta Quest to your PC so you can play PC VR games on your Quest. However, this feature only works with PCs and requires reliable Wi-Fi. This new feature works wirelessly, but can be used with any HDMI device, not just computers.
There’s one small caveat: HDMI Link requires a bit of extra hardware – a UVC- and UAC-compatible capture card and cable. Meta says it’s “essentially plug and play,” but adds that it’s not as easy as Air Link. A quick search online turns up some good options for compatible cards for under $30, making it a relatively affordable investment.
And the $50 Meta Quest 3 accessory is a game changer for anyone who wears glasses.
Here’s how to set up an HDMI link on your Quest headset:
- install Metaquest HDMI Link App.
- Connect your source device to the capture card using an HDMI cable, USB-C to HDMI cable, or Lightning to HDMI cable.
- Although optional, we recommend providing a USB-C power supply to your capture card, if available, to keep it charged while using your headset.
- Connect your headset to the capture card using a USB-A female to USB-C male cable.
- Turn on your headset and grant camera and audio recording permissions.
