Summer has always been one of my favorite seasons. There are plenty of fresh produce, garden vegetables, summer family activities in the farmers market, and it’s almost perfect…except for insects, poisonous ivy and occasional sunburns!
Since moving south many years ago, I have been able to enjoy even warmer summer weather. And even so, more mosquitoes come.
Of course, homemade bug sprays can help you avoid most mosquitoes, and homemade sunscreens can help you avoid sunburn in the first place. Still, at one point, someone forgets one or the other, leading to itchy and irritated skin.
I am also one of the lucky people who happen to be mosquito magnets. Even within minutes of getting the trash out is usually enough to leave me with a few bites. Plus, I love spending time on my weighted vests and sucking up the daytime sunlight into my lawn chairs.
Solution?
Homemade anti-rich spray
This anti-tick spray contains a powerful natural remedy mixture that will help you eliminate itching quickly. I was bitten by a mosquito, with poisonous ivy, sunburn, chigger bites and even stinging nettle burns, which gave me good results.
The secret ingredient is menthol crystals. I use these powerful natural crystals in my pain relief lotion bar, and the calm shower melts and calmly melts. Menthol is naturally cooled and soothing and is often used in ointments, balms, mouthwash, liniment, lozengen and other remedies.
If you’ve ever had peppermint tea and felt a sense of cooling your tongue, it’s thanks to the menthol that was naturally found in mint. While using mint essential oils in this cooling spray recipe, menthol crystal offers a more concentrated version. It really helps to sting from bug bites and irritation skin!
Always use gloves or cooking utensils when adding menthol crystals to the remaining ingredients. Get the residue in your hand and then touch your eyes (or other sensitive areas) and it burns!
Other cooling materials
We also included aloe vera gel for the well-known soothing properties of the skin. Apple Cider Vinegar is another staple ingredient here, an incredible natural way to soothe your inflamed skin. Lavender essential oils have a lot of data that adds a slight floral scent and backs up its anti-eye properties.
Finally, if you have it on hand, you can also add calendula hydrosol. Hydrosol is a great way to pamper yourself with excess skin and lasts much longer than herbal tea. I’ll make this with a 4oz spray bottlehowever, you can easily double the recipe or cut in half to fit the container size.
Anti-cooling spray recipe
This simple anti-tick spray uses witch hazel, aloe vera gel, sea salt, menthol crystal, apple cider vinegar and essential oils to stop the itching.
yield: 4 Ounce
-
In a small pot, heat over low heat until warm until you touch the witch’s cuteness (about 130 degrees).
-
Add salt and stir until dissolved.
-
Using tweezers or gloves, add the menthol crystals to the witch hazel and stir until they melt. Do not touch menthol with your hands as it can pierce the eyes and other sensitive areas if touched later.
-
When the menthol is melted, set the mixture aside and let it cool.
-
When cool, add aloe vera gel, apple cider vinegar, hydrosol and essential oils if used.
-
Carefully transfer the mixture to a spray bottle for use.
- Using itchy skin, spray to dry. Store in a cool place or in a fridge for up to 1 month.
- If you use the optional hydrosol, you can reduce the witch hazel by 1x tablespoon if necessary, and the final product will fit in the container.
Usage & Storage
Spray to dry out the itchy skin if necessary. This will be stored at room temperature for several weeks, but I prefer to store it in the fridge. It lasts for a long time and feels extra cooling on itchy skin.
