Los Angeles Dodgers ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday, a day after leaving the starting lineup in the second inning because of soreness in his left big toe.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Kershaw has a bone spur in his toe.
“It’s pretty badly swollen, it’s pretty much limiting his movement,” Roberts told reporters before Saturday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The 36-year-old Kershaw left the game after giving up a powerful home run to Corbin Carroll on the second pitch of the top of the second inning, a curveball that was traveling just 67 mph.
“No matter what I did, I just couldn’t find a way to kick it off comfortably with my toes,” Kershaw said after the game. “It’s very frustrating. Obviously, I let the bullpen go for eight innings and I put our team in a very tough situation.”
Los Angeles won, 10-9. Kershaw allowed three runs, three hits and one walk while recording three outs.
Kershaw, a three-time NL Cy Young Award winner and 2014 NL MVP, is 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts this season, making his season debut on July 25 after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery.
The Dodgers also placed right-hander Joe Kelly (right shoulder inflammation) on the 15-day disabled list and promoted right-handers Brent Honeywell and Ben Kasparius from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Kelly gave up two runs and three hits in 1 2/3 innings on Friday. The 36-year-old Kelly is 1-1 with a 5.20 ERA in 31 games this season.
Honeywell, 29, was 0-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 10 appearances (one start) with Los Angeles earlier this season, including two shutout innings at Oklahoma City on Aug. 22 and 27.
Honeywell was acquired on waivers by the Dodgers on July 13 after being released by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He appeared in 31 games with Double-A Indianapolis, going 1-3 with a 4.85 ERA, and made two appearances as a major league relief pitcher with Pittsburgh, posting a 2.70 ERA.
The 25-year-old Casparius had a brief but unused stop in Los Angeles earlier this month, but went 4-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) with Oklahoma City.
