Since I discovered how to make lotion bars, I have experimented with a variety of variations, including sunscreen bars and Vapo-rub bars. Today’s favorite: Bug repellent lotion bar!
They can be made as easily as the original bar and seem to be even more effective at keeping bugs away than regular homemade bug sprays. Perhaps because they actually coat the skin with a protective layer. They can be easily brought in and children can apply it themselves.
What is the bug spray problem?
I’m certainly not a fan of mosquito or mites, but I’m not a huge fan of traditional bug spray either. These usually include DEET, a chemical whose research has been linked to many potential health issues.
some Reported side effects Includes wheezing, muscle cramps, skin rashes and blisters, dizziness, disorientation, and difficulty in focus. There are also reports of increased cancer risk, aggressive behavior, and uncontrolled body movements. Experts assure us that the risk appears to be low…
Bug Repellent Lotion Bar Ingredients
This recipe doesn’t fill with toxins like traditional bug sprays, but it nourishes and moisturizes the skin while protecting it. It uses a base made of coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax. If you prefer a slightly stiff bar, you can also use cocoa butter or mango butter.
We also included a variety of herbs that are good at repelling unwanted insects. If you don’t have it on hand, you don’t need to use everything, but I think it works well. If you need to substitute herbs, add something else instead.
Dried herbs work best in this recipe, as fresh herbs can be molded into infused oils. If you have fresh herbs from your garden, and you want to use, simply dehydrate some of them first. Here’s a guide to drying herbs.
Vitamin E is optional, but it helps to extend shelf life and prevent oil from oxidizing quickly. It also adds additional protection with essential oils. These are more concentrated than herbs and help to increase the efficiency of the bar. I like it This kidsafe blend From plant therapy.

Bug Repellent Lotion Bar Recipe
Avoid bugs without chemicals using herbs and essential oils in the nutritional lotion bar.
yield: 5 bar
Inject the oil
-
Using a double boiler or glass bowl on top of a small pot, heat the water to the bottom of the pot and bring it to a boil.
-
Place coconut oil on top of a double boiler and add the dried rosemary, cloves, thyme, cinnamon, catnip and mint.
-
Cover the bowl or top of the double boiler and keep the water at medium temperature for at least 30 minutes or until the oil adopts a dark colour and smells of rosemary. You can also fill the slow cooker with about half the full cooker with water, smear it, cover it with coconut oil and herbs, cover it, and keep it in the lowest environment for several days, and create even more powerful infused oils.
-
Use a small mesh strainer or cheese cloth to strain the herbs from the oil and return the oil to the double boiler. The oil is almost half reduced and requires about ½ cup of infused oil. If you have more, save it next time!
Make a lotion bar
-
Add to the double boiler with butter and beeswax-infused coconut oil and stir until everything melts.
-
Remove from the heat and add vitamin E oil and essential oils (if used).
-
Pour the liquid into the mold.
-
Leave the mold until it is fully set (overnight is best). Alternatively, you can put it in the fridge to speed up the process.
- To use, rub the bar in exposed areas of dry skin to protect against mosquitoes.
- I use cupcake-sized molds for my lotion bar. Using a different size will result in different yields.
