The CBI has arrested a private company executive on suspicion of bribery with a deputy general manager of Oil India Limited, featured in Assam’s Duliajan, and a £7 bribery, officials said Monday.

Prayas Chakravorty, Associate General Manager (DGM) of Oil India Limited (Oil), is said to have received the award for a specific contract in favour of private companies by Jyoti Kumar Singh, DGM of Noida-based United Drill Tools Limited.

Both were arrested and produced at the CBI Special Court in Ghaziabad on Monday.

“It was allegedly that the defendant’s civil servant (Chakravorty) had requested 70 grams of gold ornaments from other unknown civil servants of the private company’s DGM (Singh) in place of a particular contract in favour of him,” a CBI spokesman said in a statement.

Singh told the accused he was unable to arrange gold jewelry and would pay in cash, officials said.

United Drill Tools MD Kunal Gupta has also arranged £7 for defendant Kunal Gupta, who is also FIR, to deliver to Chakravorty.

Upon receiving the cash, Chakravorty is said to have purchased a gold coin worth more than Rs 37,000,000 from a shop in Noida and brought the remaining cash amount home on the same day.

“Suddenly thereafter, the CBI laid the trap and arrested the accused civil servant with documents relating to the purchase of cash (approximately) of £3.34 lakh and money from the possession of the accused civil servant,” the spokesman said in a statement.

“The search took place in various locations in Delhi, Noida, Dibragal and Tinskia at the accused’s housing and official facilities, leading to the recovery of gold jewelry (obtained as a bribe).
