Distributism, a social, political and economic philosophy proposed by G.K. Chesterton and Hilary Belloc under the influence of Catholic social teaching, offers an interesting way of rethinking the contemporary social, political and economic order. However, distributists have often proven lacking in any serious practical plan for achieving the ideal social order, and they often commit economic fallacies when criticizing other schools of thought.
Distributists and economists often seem like sworn enemies. As an economist, Alexander W. Salter refuses to accept distributist skepticism that there is such a thing as economic science. But he believes it would be a mistake to dismiss Chesterton and Belloc’s powerful vision for society because of flaws in their economic theory. He joins us on the podcast to talk about his new book.
