Los Angeles firefighters continue to battle several persistent wildfires across California counties as the death toll rises to at least 16 people.
At least five people died in the Palisades fire and 11 more died in the Eaton fire, the county coroner announced Saturday.
New evacuation orders were issued Friday night for much of the Brentwood neighborhood and the foothills of the San Fernando Valley after reports the Palisades Fire on the city’s west end was heading in a new direction.
Desert winds picked up in parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties on Saturday and are expected to strengthen over the weekend, hampering firefighting efforts and potentially intensifying the fires.
The Palisades and Eaton fires are among the most destructive in the state’s history. As of Saturday evening, the Palisades Fire was approximately 11 percent contained and the Eaton Fire was 15 percent contained.
Firefighters have made some progress in extinguishing several other fires. Officials say the Kenneth Fire is 80 percent contained, the Hurst Fire is 76 percent contained, and the Lydia Fire is completely contained.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has called for an investigation into fire hydrants and other water outages in the county. Some fire hydrants in the Palisades area reportedly went out of service earlier this week, and water from reservoirs was also unavailable, compromising efforts to protect homes.
