At least 10 people have died as wildfires continue to spread across Los Angeles County.
Winds are expected to be calm from Friday into Saturday, but strong gusts are expected in the evening. Winds are expected to pick up again Sunday and into next week, but officials are vowing to be prepared for future storms.
The death toll from the current fires is expected to rise in the coming days, officials said.
Firefighters and other residents have also been injured in the life-threatening outbreak, and about 153,000 residents remain under evacuation orders.
Five major wildfires are burning across Los Angeles County. The Palisades and Eaton fires are now among the most destructive fires in state history. Both the Palisades and Eaton fires are less than 10% contained.
Officials released an update on the Eaton Fire early Friday afternoon.
“It’s like a war zone. I’ve never seen anything like this,” Katherine Berger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, told reporters.

Super scooper plane hit by drone grounded until Monday
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone made the announcement Friday. The Canadian airliner, named Quebec 1, suffered a large hole in its wing after the collision. The pilots didn’t know they were going to hit the drone. Staff at Van Nuys Airport noticed the hole.
There are currently only two Super Scoopers in operation in Los Angeles. The aircraft will undergo priority repairs and is expected to be operational on Monday.
“Everyone should know…flying a drone in a fire traffic zone is not only dangerous, it’s illegal,” Marrone said, according to CNN. “Behind the scenes, our federal partners will be putting in place procedures that will allow us to track drones in two major fire areas, and we will be able to determine who is operating that drone. I guess.”
“The most important thing to know is that if you fly a drone in one of these bushfires, all air operations will be halted. And we absolutely do not want such a thing to happen. “I don’t want that to happen,” he added.
