Boomer Esiason sparked a debate Thursday on WFAN Sports Radio when he shared his thoughts on the Giants losing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
“Honestly, I’m really thankful they don’t have the No. 1 overall pick,” Esiason said. “I don’t want either of these quarterbacks in New York.”

On Sunday, the Giants defeated the Indianapolis Colts 45-33, dropping them from the coveted top spot in the draft standings to fourth overall. While many fans saw him as a missed opportunity to select a top quarterback prospect in Shedule Sanders or Cam Ward, Esiason believes he will go a different route.

Rather than relying on an unproven rookie QB, he proposed a different strategy.
“If I were a team (not named the New York Jets) that needed a coach and a quarterback, wouldn’t it make sense for someone to hire Brian Flores and bring in Sam Darnold?” Esiason said.
The veteran analyst believes the duo could transform the Giants’ struggling offensive line.
“If (the Giants) had the courage to hire Brian Flores as the head coach and Sam Darnold as the quarterback and sign Tee Higgins as a free agent…that would be a different Sam,” Esiason said. “He’s a different guy.”
Giants draft ranking vs. team morale
The Giants’ surprise win over the Colts didn’t just impact their draft position. It ended a franchise-record 10-game losing streak and prevented them from becoming the first NFL team to go 0-9 on the season at home.
New York wide receiver Darius Slayton defended his team’s competitive spirit.
“We obviously didn’t tank,” Slayton said after the game. “Like anything, we have a job to do. This isn’t basketball, this isn’t golf, this isn’t tennis. Football, you get hit. I want people to just go out there and tell me I’m not going to let you hit the tee shot,” to Tank. ”
The win showed off their offensive potential, with Drew Lock throwing for 309 yards and four touchdowns. Rookie receiver Malik Nabors had seven catches for 171 yards and two TDs.
After the match, Lock said, “It was a lot of fun.” “We were clicking. We knew we had it in us. It was time to go out and show it and execute.”
With one game remaining against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Giants are at a crossroads. They could win and move further down the draft order, or they could lose and re-emerge as a top-two pick.
